We recently welcomed a new doctor to our office, which is always an exciting time for both the staff and our patients. To help everyone become acquainted with him and to foster a sense of community, I took the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Pleuger for an informal chat. During our conversation, I asked him a series of getting-to-know-you questions will, provide insight into his professional background but also reveal a bit about his personal interests and approach to patient care. Here are some highlights from our discussion that I hope you find informative and engaging:

  • What's your favorite condition to treat?

I first discovered chiropractic care during a particularly challenging time in my life when I was struggling with a debilitating low back injury. This injury not only caused me significant physical discomfort but also impacted my daily activities and overall quality of life. I vividly remember the frustration of being unable to engage in simple tasks, such as lifting my children or participating in activities I once enjoyed. After exhausting various treatment options, I decided to seek the expertise of a chiropractor, and that decision ultimately transformed my life in ways I had never anticipated.

From my first appointment, I was struck by the holistic approach that chiropractic care offered. The chiropractor took the time to thoroughly assess my condition, not just focusing on the symptoms but also considering my lifestyle, posture, and overall health. This comprehensive evaluation allowed for a tailored treatment plan that addressed the root causes of my pain rather than merely masking it. Through a combination of spinal adjustments, therapeutic exercises, and lifestyle advice, I began to experience significant relief. The gradual improvement in my condition reignited my enthusiasm for life, empowering me to reclaim my physical abilities and engage fully with my family and community.

Because of this profound personal experience, I developed a deep passion for treating low back pain in my practice. I understand firsthand the debilitating effects it can have on a person's life, and I am dedicated to helping others navigate their journey toward recovery. I strive to provide the same level of comprehensive care that I received, ensuring that my patients feel heard, understood, and supported throughout their treatment process. My goal is not only to alleviate pain but also to educate my patients about maintaining a healthy spine and preventing future injuries. Witnessing my patients regain their mobility and confidence brings me immense satisfaction, reinforcing my commitment to this vital aspect of chiropractic care.

  • What's one technique you prefer using?

I employ a comprehensive array of techniques and methods to ensure that my patients receive the highest quality of care possible. Among these techniques, I utilize Modified Gonstead, which is a specific chiropractic adjustment method that emphasizes precise spinal alignment and the correction of subluxations. This approach is particularly beneficial for addressing issues related to the spine and nervous system, as it focuses on the biomechanics of the body. In addition to Modified Gonstead, I also incorporate the Diversified technique, which is one of the most widely used chiropractic methods. This technique involves high-velocity, low-amplitude thrusts to restore proper motion to the joints, thereby enhancing overall function and alleviating pain. The combination of these two methods allows me to tailor treatment to the individual needs of each patient, ensuring a more personalized and effective approach to their care. Moreover, I utilize the Activator method, which employs a handheld instrument to deliver a gentle impulse to specific areas of the spine. This technique is particularly advantageous for patients who may be sensitive to more forceful adjustments, as it provides a low-force alternative that can be just as effective in promoting spinal health. Another technique I incorporate is drop flexion, which utilizes a specialized table that allows for a controlled drop during adjustments. This method can enhance the effectiveness of the adjustment while minimizing discomfort for the patient. It is particularly useful for addressing issues in the lower back and pelvis. Furthermore, I place a strong emphasis on stretching and various physical therapy techniques. These methods are essential for improving flexibility, strengthening muscles, and promoting overall physical health. Stretching not only helps to alleviate tension in the muscles but also enhances mobility and range of motion, which can be beneficial in the rehabilitation process. By combining these diverse techniques—Modified Gonstead, Diversified, Activator, drop flexion, and a range of stretching and physical therapy methods—I strive to provide a holistic approach to chiropractic care. This multifaceted strategy allows me to address the unique needs of each patient, ensuring that they receive comprehensive care that targets their specific issues while promoting their overall well-being. Ultimately, my goal is to empower my patients to achieve optimal health and maintain a pain-free lifestyle through effective and individualized treatment plans.

  • What's a common misconception about chiropractic care you hear often? One prevalent misconception that circulates frequently is the belief that chiropractors are not "real" doctors. This misunderstanding often stems from a lack of awareness regarding the extensive education and training that chiropractors undergo. In fact, to become a chiropractor, a candidate must complete a rigorous doctoral program, which typically spans four years after obtaining an undergraduate degree. This program includes comprehensive coursework in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and various diagnostic techniques. Furthermore, aspiring chiropractors are required to pass a series of national board examinations to ensure they meet the professional standards necessary to practice safely and effectively. While it's true that chiropractors and medical doctors focus on different aspects of health care—with chiropractors primarily concentrating on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those related to the spine—their training equips them with a deep understanding of human biology and health. This differentiation in focus does not diminish the legitimacy of chiropractic care or the qualifications of those who practice it. In fact, many chiropractors work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care for their patients, demonstrating that they play a vital role in the broader healthcare system.

  • How do you incorporate at-home exercises or stretches, into your treatment plans?

I like to make sure that every treatment plan includes a variety of stretches and at-home exercises that can facilitate the adjustment process, ultimately leading to the best possible outcomes for my patients. Incorporating stretches into a treatment plan is essential for enhancing flexibility, improving range of motion, and reducing the risk of injury. These stretches are carefully selected based on the individual needs of each patient, taking into consideration their specific conditions, physical abilities, and personal goals. For instance, a patient recovering from a sports injury may benefit from dynamic stretches that promote blood flow and prepare the muscles for activity, while someone with chronic pain may require gentle static stretches aimed at relieving tension and promoting relaxation. At-home exercises play a crucial role in the overall treatment strategy as well. They empower patients to take an active role in their recovery, providing them with tools to manage their condition outside of clinical visits. These exercises can vary widely, from strength training routines designed to build muscle and support joint stability, to balance exercises that help prevent falls and improve coordination. By encouraging patients to incorporate these practices into their daily lives, we can help them develop greater independence and confidence in their physical abilities. Moreover, I believe that education is a key component of any effective treatment plan. It is important to explain to patients the rationale behind each stretch and exercise, as well as how they contribute to their overall recovery process. This understanding not only increases compliance but also motivates patients to engage more fully with their treatment. In addition, I often provide patients with progress tracking tools, such as journals or apps, to help them monitor their improvements over time. This not only fosters a sense of achievement but also allows for adjustments to be made to the treatment plan as necessary, ensuring that it remains aligned with their evolving needs. Ultimately, my goal is to create a holistic treatment approach that encompasses not only the physical aspects of recovery but also supports the emotional and psychological well-being of my patients. By integrating stretches and at-home exercises into every treatment plan, I aim to enhance the overall effectiveness of the therapeutic process and help my patients achieve the best possible outcomes in their health and wellness journeys.

Trusting the process is an essential mindset when embarking on a journey toward achieving optimal health and well-being. This journey is not merely a destination; rather, it is a gradual progression that unfolds over time, requiring patience, commitment, and an open heart.

  • What is one thing that gets in the way of patients reaching their health goals?

It's sad to say, but often insurance limitations can pose significant challenges when a patient finds themselves out of network or when their specific treatment is not covered by the insurance plan they currently have. These situations can create barriers that prevent patients from accessing the vital care they need, leading to frustration and, in some cases, worsening health conditions. The complexities of insurance policies can often leave patients feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about their options, which is a common experience in today's healthcare landscape.

However, at Jorde Chiropractic, we understand the intricacies of these issues and are committed to navigating them alongside our patients. We have a fantastic team of dedicated professionals who are not only knowledgeable about chiropractic care but are also well-versed in working with various insurance providers and understanding their policies. We are here to advocate for you, helping to bridge the gap between your healthcare needs and the financial realities imposed by insurance limitations.

By working closely with you, we aim to create a personalized care plan that not only addresses your health concerns but also fits within your budgetary constraints. Our goal is to ensure that you receive the highest quality of care without the added stress of financial burdens. At Jorde Chiropractic, we are dedicated to supporting you on your path to wellness, making sure that you have access to the treatments necessary for your recovery and overall health improvement.

  • What's a non-physical ailment that you think is most affected by spinal health?

I think one thing that can be significantly affected by physical conditions such as spinal injuries or chronic back pain is your mental health. This connection is often overlooked, yet it plays a crucial role in the overall well-being of individuals facing these challenges. Having witnessed and personally experienced the profound effects of such conditions, I can attest to how they can lead to a debilitating cycle of mental strain.

When someone suffers from a spinal injury or endures chronic back pain, the immediate physical discomfort can quickly escalate into a more complex web of emotional challenges. The persistent pain often results in heightened levels of anxiety, irritability, and even depression. Individuals may find themselves feeling overwhelmed by the constant struggle against their physical limitations, which can lead to feelings of hopelessness and isolation. The inability to engage in normal daily activities, whether it be work, exercise, or social interactions, can further exacerbate these feelings, creating a sense of disconnect from the world around them.

Moreover, the psychological impact of living with chronic pain can be profound. It can lead to a vicious cycle where mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, can worsen the perception of pain. This means that the emotional state of an individual can directly influence their physical condition. For instance, heightened anxiety levels can lead to increased muscle tension, which can, in turn, exacerbate existing spinal problems. This tension often manifests in the form of tightness in the back and neck, creating a feedback loop where physical pain and mental distress continuously feed into one another.

On the flip side, it is also important to recognize that individuals who are already experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety may be more susceptible to developing spinal health issues. This is due to the physiological responses to stress, which can lead to muscle tension and postural changes that ultimately contribute to musculoskeletal pain. When the body is under constant stress, the muscles can become tight and fatigued, leading to discomfort and pain that can further aggravate mental health issues.

  • What's the most common condition you see in your practice? Probably low back pain or neck pain.

  • Do you work with other healthcare professionals, such as massage therapists or physical therapists?

We work closely with a diverse array of healthcare professionals, which is essential for providing comprehensive care to our patients. In my last clinic, we had a particularly strong collaboration with orthopedic doctors. This partnership was crucial because it allowed us to focus on delivering the highest quality of non-surgical care options available. The orthopedic specialists brought a wealth of knowledge regarding musculoskeletal issues, which complemented our approach to treatment. We often held multidisciplinary meetings where we could discuss patient cases in detail, ensuring that every aspect of the patient's care was addressed. This collaboration not only enhanced our treatment protocols but also fostered an environment of shared learning and improvement among the healthcare team.

In addition to our work with orthopedic doctors, we also engaged with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and pain management specialists. Each professional contributed unique insights and techniques, which enriched our treatment strategies. For instance, physical therapists played a vital role in developing personalized rehabilitation programs that aligned with the recommendations from orthopedic specialists. This integrated approach enabled us to provide a seamless continuum of care, maximizing the potential for positive patient outcomes.

Moreover, I have already started building some professional connections in Sioux Falls, which I believe will further enhance our collaborative efforts. Establishing relationships with local healthcare providers is critical as it allows for a network of support and shared resources. By connecting with other specialists in the Sioux Falls area, I aim to create a robust referral system that will benefit our patients. This network will not only facilitate better communication regarding patient care but also promote a holistic approach to health and wellness in the community.

As I continue to expand my professional network, I am eager to learn from other healthcare professionals and share best practices. I believe that collaboration is key to advancing patient care and improving outcomes, and I am committed to fostering these relationships for the benefit of our patients and the healthcare community as a whole.

  • What inspired you to become a chiropractor?

I was injured on a training exercise in my duty as a flight medic for the army while I was simultaneously pursuing my nursing education. This incident occurred during a particularly demanding phase of my training, where physical endurance and mental resilience were being tested to their limits. Unfortunately, the injury I sustained was a severe low back injury, which not only caused excruciating pain but also significantly hindered my mobility. The impact of this injury was profound; it left me unable to continue my studies in nursing school, a field I was deeply passionate about and had dedicated so much time and effort to.

The inability to attend classes and participate in hands-on training was devastating. Nursing school was not just an educational journey for me; it was a dream I had nurtured for years. The thought of having to pause my progress and the uncertainty of my future in healthcare weighed heavily on my mind. After the injury, I struggled with feelings of frustration and helplessness, as my physical limitations restricted me from engaging in activities I once took for granted, including the simple joy of picking up my child, which was an essential part of my daily life and a source of happiness.

In the midst of this challenging period, I was referred to a local chiropractor, a decision that would ultimately change the trajectory of my life. At first, I was skeptical about chiropractic care; I didn’t fully understand how it could address the complexities of my back injury. However, as I began my treatment, I started to realize the profound effects that chiropractic adjustments and therapies could have on my body. The chiropractor meticulously assessed my condition and developed a tailored treatment plan aimed at alleviating my pain and restoring my mobility.

With each session, I felt a gradual but significant improvement. The pain that had once been a constant companion began to diminish, and I regained a sense of control over my body. I could feel the tightness in my back loosening, and I was slowly able to perform movements that had previously seemed impossible. The ability to lift my child again was a monumental moment for me; it represented not just a physical recovery but also an emotional and psychological one. I began to understand that this journey through rehabilitation was not merely about healing my back but also about rediscovering my strength and resilience.

Reflecting on this experience, I realized that the path I was on was not just a detour but a significant part of my journey toward becoming a healthcare professional. Although I had initially viewed my injury as a setback, it ultimately guided me toward a deeper understanding of the human body, the importance of holistic care, and the vital role that alternative therapies can play in recovery. This newfound perspective ignited a passion within me to explore these areas further, and I became more determined than ever to continue my education in nursing, equipped with the knowledge and experience that would allow me to help others who faced similar challenges.

In conclusion, while my journey has been fraught with obstacles, it has also been filled with invaluable lessons and personal growth. The support I received from my chiropractor not only restored my physical capabilities but also reinforced my commitment to the nursing profession. I now approach my studies with a renewed sense of purpose, eager to integrate my experiences into my future practice, ensuring that I can offer compassion and understanding to those I will care for.

  • What's your best "feel-good" story from treating a patient?

I had a patient who presented with an intense level of low back pain that was so severe it significantly impacted her daily life. She expressed her distress about not being able to pick up her children, which was not only a physical limitation but also an emotional burden for her as a parent. The inability to engage in such a fundamental aspect of motherhood was heartbreaking for her, and I could relate deeply to her situation due to my own experiences with injury.

Having faced similar challenges in my own life, I understood the frustration and helplessness that could arise from being unable to perform tasks that many take for granted, such as lifting a child into their arms or playing with them on the floor. The connection I felt with her plight allowed me to approach her treatment with empathy and a personal understanding of her struggles.

After a course of treatment that included targeted physical therapy, pain management strategies, and exercises designed to strengthen her core and improve her flexibility, she returned to my office with a smile that lit up the room. When she shared the incredible news that she was able to lift her children without experiencing pain, it felt like a monumental victory not just for her, but for me as well.

Hearing her describe the joy of being able to hold her kids again, to engage in playful activities, and to simply enjoy those precious moments of motherhood without the shadow of pain looming over her was profoundly rewarding. It reaffirmed my commitment to helping patients regain their quality of life, and it was a reminder of the powerful impact that effective treatment can have on an individual’s life.

That day stands out in my memory as a testament to resilience and the importance of compassionate care. It reinforced my belief in the healing process and the transformative power of physical therapy, not only in alleviating pain but also in restoring hope and joy to my patients’ lives.

  • What do you do to stay healthy and active?

I have a strong preference for functional exercise, which emphasizes movements that mimic everyday activities and improve overall physical performance. One of my favorite forms of functional exercise is walking. Walking is not only a simple and accessible activity, but it also serves as a fantastic way to enhance cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles, and improve flexibility. Whether I’m strolling through a local park, navigating the trails of a nature reserve, or simply walking around my neighborhood, I find that this low-impact exercise provides numerous benefits. It allows me to clear my mind, enjoy the fresh air, and engage with my surroundings, making it a refreshing addition to my fitness routine. In addition to walking, I also enjoy lifting weights, which is an essential component of my functional exercise regimen. Weightlifting helps to build muscle strength and endurance, which are crucial for performing daily tasks with ease and efficiency. By incorporating a variety of exercises that target different muscle groups, I can enhance my overall strength and stability. For instance, exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses not only improve my muscle tone but also contribute to better balance and coordination. Moreover, lifting weights allows me to challenge myself progressively. I appreciate setting goals for increasing my lifting capacity, whether it’s adding more weight, increasing the number of repetitions, or mastering new techniques. This progressive overload is vital for continuous improvement and keeps my workouts engaging and effective. Combining walking and weightlifting creates a well-rounded exercise regimen that supports both my physical and mental well-being. Each session leaves me feeling accomplished and energized, and I find that this blend of activities helps me maintain a balanced approach to fitness. Overall, my dedication to functional exercise, highlighted by my love for walking and lifting weights, plays a significant role in promoting a healthy lifestyle and enhancing my quality of life.

  • What's a hobby you enjoy outside of work?

I like to play video games and spend time with my family, as both activities bring me a great deal of joy and fulfillment. Video games, in particular, offer a unique escape into different worlds where I can engage in thrilling adventures, solve intricate puzzles, and connect with friends, both old and new, through online multiplayer experiences. The variety of genres available—from action-packed shooters to immersive role-playing games—ensures that there is always something new and exciting to explore. This hobby not only provides entertainment but also serves as a way to unwind after a long day, allowing me to recharge and relax.

On the other hand, spending quality time with my family is equally important to me. Family gatherings, whether they involve shared meals, game nights, or simply enjoying each other's company, foster strong bonds and create lasting memories. We often engage in activities that everyone enjoys, such as playing board games, watching movies, or going on outdoor adventures. These moments strengthen our relationships and remind us of the importance of supporting one another through life's ups and downs.

Moving closer to LeMars has been a significant change for us, as it allows us to spend more time on the family farm, which holds a special place in our hearts. The farm is not just a piece of land; it represents our family's heritage and values. Working together on the farm cultivates a sense of teamwork and responsibility among us. We engage in various tasks, from planting crops to caring for animals, and these activities provide an opportunity for us to learn valuable life skills while enjoying the beauty of nature.

Being closer to the farm means that we can participate in seasonal activities, such as harvesting fruits and vegetables or celebrating the arrival of new livestock. These experiences are not only educational but also deeply rewarding, as we witness the fruits of our labor and the cycles of life on the farm. Additionally, the farm serves as a gathering place for extended family and friends, where we can host barbecues, picnics, and other events that bring everyone together in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Overall, the combination of my passion for video games and the cherished time spent with my family, particularly on the farm, creates a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. The proximity to La Mars enhances our ability to connect with nature and each other, enriching our lives in meaningful ways.

  • What's the most interesting place you've ever traveled to?I did a mission trip to Guatemala when I was going to USD to build houses, and it was one of the most amazing places I've ever been to. This experience was not only about construction; it was a profound journey that opened my eyes to the beauty and resilience of the Guatemalan people and their culture. During my time there, I had the opportunity to work alongside local families who were eager to improve their living conditions.

  • What's the one thing you can't live without? Other than family, my one guilty pleasure is white monster energy drinks.

  • If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I would fly. The sensation of taking to the skies has always been an exhilarating experience for me. When I was a flight medic, I cherished every single moment spent in the air, soaring above the clouds, knowing that I was part of a critical mission to save lives. The thrill of being airborne, coupled with the profound sense of purpose that came with my role, made each flight a unique adventure. The helicopter's blades would slice through the air, and the rush of wind would fill the cabin, creating an atmosphere charged with adrenaline and anticipation.

As a flight medic, my responsibilities were vast and varied. I was not just a medical professional; I was a first responder in high-pressure situations, often flying into remote or dangerous locations to provide immediate care to those in dire need. Each mission brought new challenges, whether it was retrieving a patient from a rugged terrain or stabilizing someone in critical condition during transport. The camaraderie I shared with my fellow crew members was unparalleled; we relied on each other’s skills and instincts, forming a tight-knit unit dedicated to the same noble cause.

The training I underwent was rigorous, preparing me for the unpredictable nature of air medical services. I learned to remain calm under pressure, to think quickly and effectively, and to make split-second decisions that could mean the difference between life and death. Every flight was a testament to my commitment to serving others, and I found immense satisfaction in knowing that my efforts could help save lives.

However, it was a sad day when my injury meant that I could no longer serve in this capacity. The abrupt end to my flying career left a void that was difficult to fill. I mourned not just the loss of the exhilarating flights, but also the profound connection I had with my team and the patients we served. Each flight had been an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the world, and the realization that I could no longer participate in that mission was heartbreaking.

The memories of those flights lingered in my mind, vivid and alive. I often found myself reminiscing about the sights I had seen from above—the sprawling landscapes, the glimmers of cities below, and the breathtaking sunsets that painted the sky in hues of orange and pink. I missed the feeling of the helicopter lifting off the ground, the thrill of ascent, and the satisfaction of landing safely after a successful mission. Those experiences shaped me, and the lessons learned during my time as a flight medic continue to resonate deeply within me.
